Fourier analysis is a technique in applied science and engineering for transforming the view of the signal from time domain to frequency domain. It is generally meant for analysis and synthesis of functions. By analysis we mean the decomposition into easy-to-analyze components and by synthesis we mean the reconstruction from such components. This paper focuses on approximating two dimensional functions using two dimensional Fourier series. By means of statistical analysis of the Fourier approach to function approximation, it is shown that trigonometric functions are best approximated using the Fourier method.
